BORDER SURFERS DOMINATE ON DAY THREE OF THE 2007 SOUTH AFRICAN SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS AT NAHOON REEF.

Border's Open Men and Under 20 Girls took advantage of another day of good 4 foot offshore surf on Day Three of the 2007 SA Surfing Championships at their local break to put the host province in a good position to take the President's Cup for the third time in 41 years.

The event will end with the holding of the finals in the Men’s, Women’s, Under 20 Boys and Under 20 Girls divisions tomorrow. (Sunday June 10)

Former two time SA Champion Wayne Monk, 2007 SA Open winner Devyn Mattheys, 2006 SA Championships runner up Simon Fish, Gary Muller and Tyrell Johnson all advanced to the quarter finals of the Men's Division to put Border in a strong position for Team honours going into the final day of competition.

Southern KZN are also looking strong with two surfers, Gary van Wieringen and Andrew Banks, in the quarters while 2005 National Under 20 champion Rory Beach (KZN), Gerhard du Plessis (BOL), Scott Venter (ZUL), Jonno Sweetman (SCAPE) and WP captain Luke Christie Smith make up the final 12 in this important group.

The Women's Division semi finals are made up of defending SA Champion Penny Robarts, her twin sister Tammy (both Boland), 2006 National Under 20 Girls champion Tammy Lee Smith (ZUL), former ASP World Championship Tour surfer Heather Clark and 2006 SSA Pro Surf Tour champion Sarah Maritz (both SKZN), Stacey Guy (WP) and Jess Matthews (EP).

KZN star surfers Josh Redman and Brandon Jackson supported by Peder Christensen, dominate the quarter finals of the Under 20 Boys Division which include 2006 National Junior Team member Jaco Steyn, and Adam Hansen (both WP), Bertie Stuurman and Justin Grey (both EP), 2007 SA Junior team captain Klee Strachan (SKZN), Mark Shepperson (ZUL), Avro Johnson (BOL), 2007 National Junior Team member Nic Godfrey (SCAPE) and current ASP World Qualifying Series surfer Clinton Gravett (BOR).

This division produced two of the biggest upsets of the event with top ranked WP surfers Brandon Roberts and Brett Shearer of WP both eliminated from the event by Jeffrey's Bay local Bertie Stuurman and Boland surfer Avro Johnson respectively.

On the other end of the scale, Josh Redman of KZN set himself up for a national title with some brilliant surfing, scoring a magnificent 9.9 out of 10 in his Round Three heat and posting the highest heat score in any of the divisions during the three days of competition.

The Under 20 Girls who have reached the final eight in the premier surfing tournament on the Surfing South Africa calendar are 2007 ASP World Qualifying Series campaigner Nikita Robb and 2006 SA Junior team member Alice Mc Gregor (both BOR), current SA Junior team member Chantelle Rautenbach and Caylin de Reuck (both BOL), talented 12 year old Sarah Baum and KZN teammate Danielle Le Roux and 2007 Under 20 Pro Surf Tour ratings leader Tarryn Chudleigh (WP).

With only a few rounds to go before the 2007 tournament comes to a conclusion, Border and Southern KZN head the team title race followed by defending champions Western Province and KZN. Winners of the provincial team event will take home the 35 year old President's Cup while individual winners will be crowned as the National Champions in their respective divisions.

The SA Championships is the longest running surfing event in Africa and one of the longest running contests in the World. Steeped in tradition it features over 150 surfers competing for their provincial teams as well as for individual honours in the Men’s, Women’s, Under 20 Boys and Under 20 Girls Divisions.

Held in a different province each year, the championships take four days to complete and while there is no prize-money on offer the chance to become one of the four National champions is priceless.

Surfers competing this year are representing defending champions Western Province, hosts and 2006 runners up Border, Southern KZN, multiple champions KZN, Zululand, Boland, Southern Cape and Eastern Province.
