BORDER WIN PRESIDENT'S CUP AT THE 2007 SOUTH AFRICAN SURFING CHAMPIONSHIPS : NAHOON REEF, EAST LONDON.

Led by the newly crowned SA Men's champion Devyn Mattheys, host province Border posted a huge 48,554 team points, the highest score in 15 years, and blew their provincial opponents away to win the 35 year old President's Cup for only the third time in the 41 year history of the event.

A never say die performance by Southern KZN saw them finish second for the second time with 35,504 points while defending champions Western Province accumulated 32,982 to finish third.

KZN, who have won the Presidents Cup 28 times only managed to score 28,312 and matched their fourth place of 2006, while Boland had their best SA Championship result ever, finishing fifth on 27,672.

Zululand ended sixth on 26,590 points, Eastern Province posted 23,340 points to end seventh and Southern Cape were eighth on 21,004 points.

In the final of the Men's division Mattheys scored 14.75, second placed Rory Beach of KZN achieved 10,50 while Simon Fish, a finalist in 2006, did it again this year when he finished third with 9,10 points. Fourth was Gary Van Wieringen of Southern KZN, who had a disappointing final, scoring only 6,25 points, but his exceptional surfing throughout the event was acknowledged when he was awarded the Surfer of the Contest trophy.

Just six weeks ago Mattheys won the SA Open Championships at Nahoon Reef and his victory continues the long tradition that has seen a Border surfer winning the Men's final of the National Championships when they are held at Nahoon Reef. When the event was last held at Nahoon Reef, back in 2001, Border won the President's Cup and Greg Emslie became the SA Champion.

The Women's title went to Sarah Maritz of Southern KZN who was second in 2004, 2005 and 2006. The 2006 Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour champion made sure the title was hers this time when she scored massive 17,60 points out of a possible 20 which was just too good for teammate and former World Championship Tour surfer Heather Clark who, despite posting 14,50. had to settle for second place.

Tammy Robarts with 10,50 was third ahead of her twin sister and Boland team mate, Penny who was the defending champion in this division.

SARAH MARITZ OF SOUTHERN KZN 2007 SA WOMEN'S CHAMPION

SA Junior Team captain Klee Strachan of Southern KZN's 10,50 points were just enough to edge out surprise package of this year's SA Championships, Bertie Stuurman of Eastern Province. Stuurman needed just 2 points to win the title but couldn't find a scoring wave in the last few seconds of the heat

KLEE STRACHAN OF SOUTHERN KZN, 2007 UNDER 20 BOYS CHAMPION

Bertie Stuurman hails from Pellsrus in Jeffrey's Bay and has had to fight hard to achieve his dream of becoming an established surfer. His runner up spot behind Strachan and his defeat of some of South Africa's top Under 20 surfers in the earlier rounds of the event is a credit to his dedication and determination and his coach, EP Surfing President Etienne Venter, must be bursting with pride.

Stuurman was a deserving winner of the unique Zig Zag Blowing Up Award and R1000 in cash.

Jaco Steyn of Western Province scored 7,16 to finish third in the Under 20 Boys division final and Mark Shepperson of Zululand posted 6,70 points to finish fourth.

A stoked Chantelle Rautenbach of Boland won the South African Under 20 Girls title posting 14,50 points to her team mate Caylin de Reuck's 8,10 while pre contest favourite Nikita Robb of Border was third with 7,10 and Tarryn Chudleigh of Western Province was fourth with 6,40 points.

Rautenbach, Robb and Chudleigh recently represented South Africa in the ISA World Junior Surfing Championships in Portugal.

CHANTELLE RAUTENBACH OF BOLAND 2007 SA UNDER 20 GIRLS CHAMPION

Josh Redman of KZN, who scored a 9.9 out of 10 for one of his waves on Day Three of the championships, was named as the Top Junior Surfer of the event.

The SA Championships, which this year was unable to attract a sponsor, is the longest running surfing event in Africa and one of the longest running contests in the World. Steeped in tradition, it features over 150 surfers competing for the prestigious President's Cup as well as for individual honours in the Men’s, Women’s, Under 20 Boys and Under 20 Girls Divisions.

Held in a different province each year, the championships take four days to complete and while there is no prize-money on offer the chance to become one of the four National champions is priceless.

The 2007 SA Championships was held in perfect 4- 6 foot offshore surf over four days and included a Technical Officials Seminar presented by ISA Head Judge and SSA Operations Manager Cyril Nel and was supported by a grant from the National Lottery.

The 2007 SA Surfing Championships were presented and produced by Surfing South Africa and hosted by Border Surfriders Association.
