VICTORIA BAY GETS READY TO WELCOME SEVEN PROVINCIAL TEAMS TO THE 2007 REEF WETSUITS SA MASTERS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Over 100 surfers representing seven provinces will be competing in five divisions in the 2007 Reef Wetsuits SA Masters Championships which get under way at Victoria Bay, near George in the Southern Cape on Thursday.

This will be the third edition of the SA Masters Championships but the first time that Victoria Bay will be hosting the tournament.
Ironically it was at this venue some 17 years ago that Reef Wetsuits sponsored their first ever national tournament, the 1990 South African Championships.

The man who won the Open Men's title that year was Victoria Bay legend Leonard Giles, who will once again be competing for Southern Cape in this year's event, only this time he will be surfing in the Over 50 Veterans.

He will come against 1978 World Champion Ant Brodowicz (Southern KZN) and the likes of former SA Champions Dave Fish and Brian Heathcote ( both Border) and Glen Bowles (EP) who are the pick of the 13 surfers contesting the title in this division.

In the 45 to 49 or Kahunas age group Colin Buitendag and Steven Hair (both Southern Cape), former national team member Glen Row (Boland) and WP duo Ronald Kingma and Ronnie Veldhuis head up a field of 16 surfers while the twenty seven 40 to 44 Grandmasters division boasts a 2007 ISA World Masters Championships finalist in David Malherbe (Border) as well a host of division finalists over the years in David Stubbs and Andre Mory ( both WP), Mickey Duffus (Boland), Mike Brent and Nick Pike ( both Border), Peter Lawson and Glen Milne ( both KZN), Craig van Greunen (EP) and Brian Turner (Southern Cape).

Two time SA Open Mens champion and 2000 SA Team captain Wayne Monk (Border), former SA champions Gareth Sepp (Border), Carl Roux (Southern KZN) and Greg Swart (KZN), 2007 SA Masters team member Andre Malherbe (Border) and multiple national finalists such as Andrew Preen (WP) and Rob and Steven Pollock (Southern Cape) will compete in the 34 to 39 Masters age group which is made up of 28 surfers.

The youngest group of surfers in the South African Masters Championships are the 30 to 35 year olds, some of whom are still competing on the 2007 Pro Surf Tour. 2001 and 2006 South African Open Men's champion Quintin Jones (WP) must be one of the favourites in the 25 strong field which includes 2007 SA Championships Open Mens finalist Gary Van Wieringen (Southern KZN), Craig Els (EP), Ryan Bisset (KZN), Andrew Lange (Southern KZN) and Philip Malherbe (Border).

While there will be individual champions crowned in the five age divisions there is also Provincial glory at stake for the seven teams competing in the the Reef Wetsuits SA Masters Championships.
All the surfers in each of the team's points will count towards the Provincial title which has been won by Southern KZN since the first SA Masters championships was held in 2005.
This year the team from Southern KZN face a tough battle from 2006 runners up Border and hosts Southern Cape with Western Province and Eastern Province both in the running if they fire on all cylinders.

Teams will gather at the Far Hills Country Hotel at 7pm on Wednesday night August 15 for the Opening Function and the event will run from Thursday August 16 to Sunday August 19.

Each day's results will be posted on www.surfingsouthafrica.co.za
