| Ricky Basnett joins World Title contenders in Round 4 currently underway in Brazil | Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro Stop No. 9 of 10 on the 2007 Foster’s ASP World Tour Imbituba, Brazil Oct. 30 – Nov. 7, 2007
Ricky Basnett joins World Title contenders in Round 4 currently underway in Brazil Stephanie Gilmore extends her ratings lead by winning Mancora Peru Classic Trio of SA surfers still in contention in Xcel Pro in Hawaii
South Africa’s Ricky Basnett boosted his hopes of qualifying for the 2008 Foster’s ASP World Tour by cruising past an out of rhythm Bruce Irons (HAW) in solid 1.5 to 2.5 metre waves to reach Round 4 of the Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro in southern Brazil on Monday.
The remaining 15 heats in the event are currently underway and all the action can be viewed live on www.aspworldtour.com starting at around 12 noon.
Competing in testing 1.5 to 2.5 metre surf yesterday, the 22 year-old from Durban’s Bluff maintained his proud record of reaching the third round of all nine World Tour events in his rookie season and is now guaranteed a minimum of ninth place in the penultimate event of the 2007 season.
Coming into the event ranked No. 21, but only 118 points ahead of the 27th spot, which is the cutoff for re-qualification, Basnett has justified his decision to largely ignore the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) and looks likely to go to the final event at Pipeline in Hawaii next month rated inside the top 20.
However, the Durbanite faces a tough encounter with World Title contender Taj Burrow in Round 4 with the Australian desperate to finish ahead of ratings leader and compatriot Mick Fanning in this event in order to keep the world title race running into the last event.
Both Fanning and 8X World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) also advanced to Round 4 with victories over Brazilians Marco Polo and Renato Galvao respectively. Fanning only needs to finish level with or ahead of Burrow to clinch his maiden world crown in Brazil while Slater needs to finish two rounds ahead of Fanning to keep his hopes for an unprecedented 9th world title alive for 2007.
South Africans Greg Emslie and Royden Bryson, both from East London, were bundled out of the event in Round 2. Emslie lost a close match up with Cory Lopez (USA) while Bryson was ousted by two-time Brazilian champion Jihad Khodr.
The Hang Loose Pro, stop No. 9 of 10 on the 2007 Foster’s ASP World Tour, only got underway on Saturday afternoon following four days of flat surf and a storm that destroyed part of the infrastructure.

Australian rookie sensation Stephanie Gilmore extended her lead at the top of the ASP Women’s World Tour rankings by beating reigning and 7X World Champion Layne Beachley in the final of the Mancora Peru Classic on Saturday.
Gilmore now holds a substantial 526 point advantage over second placed Silvana Lima (BRA) with former world champ Sofia Mulanovich (Peru) more than 400 more points further behind in third spot on the rankings going into the final two events of the season in Hawaii.
South Africa’s Rosanne Hodge was sidelined by Beachley in Round 3 in the long left-breaking waves at the first World Tour event to be staged in Peru. The East Londoner remains in 14th position on the ratings, 230 points behind the cutoff 10th position currently occupied by Jacqueline Silva (BRA).
Hodge will have to call on all her undoubted talent to reach at least the quarter-finals of both the Hawaiian events, or a semi-final in one, to qualify for another year on the elite level tour.

Jordy Smith, Gavin Roberts and Dave Richards, the only three SA surfers competing in the 4 Star WQS rated Xcel Pro presented by No Fear event in Hawaii, are still in contention for the event title after surfing one heat each.
While Smith, the WQS ratings leader, and Roberts were seeded into Round 3 and have now progressed to the last 32 in the event, Richards started in Round 2 and was one of the standouts of the second day of the event.
The 21 year-old from Kommetjie scored an incredible tube on a double overhead wave at the renowned break of Sunset Beach on the North Shore of the island of Oahu. Richards was awarded 8.83 points for the ride which remains amongst the Top 10 scoring rides of the event to date.
Roberts (Scottburgh) and Richards are keen to improve their WQS rankings of #99 and #216 respectively in the last event before the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing decides the world champions in Hawaii.
Smith, who currently holds the biggest lead in the history of the WQS, cannot improve his points tally even if he wins the Xcel Pro as the lowest of his seven counting results already equals the 1 500 points awarded to the winner of a 4 Star rated event.
Richards’ high scoring ride is included in the video highlights package on the website www.surfinglive.com/events/xcel2007/ where the live action is webcast while the event is running (between 8pm and 5am CAT).
